The Challenge

Introducing changes to health care benefits can spark confusion, concern, and frustration among employees. At AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO), a global pipe manufacturer with 3,000 employees, workers and retirees protested after the company adjusted health care premiums from free to low-cost. Many viewed the change as abrupt and unfair, leading to picketing outside the factory and significant media attention. The company turned to Brian Pia for help resolving the issue.

The Work

Brian analyzed ACIPCO’s new health care plan, comparing it to the old one and benchmarking it against industry standards. His analysis showed that the updated plan remained more competitive than most other companies’ offerings.

To address employees’ concerns, Brian developed a compelling presentation and provided strategic guidance to ACIPCO CEO Van Richey. Richey led transparent and engaging town hall meetings, where he explained the rationale for the changes and presented data comparing ACIPCO’s plan with those of other companies. This approach educated employees and retirees, reducing misunderstandings and alleviating frustrations.

The Results

Brian’s strategy immediately ended the protests by rebuilding trust and addressing misconceptions. Employees and retirees gained a clearer understanding of the company’s decision and felt their concerns had been acknowledged. Since then, ACIPCO’s health care benefits have received positive feedback. The company also earned the prestigious C. Everett Koop National Health Award for its WellBody health and wellness program.
