Resolving a food safety crisis in hours

THE CHALLENGE

Ventura Foods contacted Brian Pia and told him a supplier’s flavor enhancer used in seven Dean’s Dip products might have salmonella. Salmonella causes 1.4 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths annually.

THE WORK

Brian mapped out a plan and created messaging. The company issued an immediate voluntary recall following his recommendation. We announced the recall first to grocery stores and then to the media. Stores removed the products, and Ventura halted production and sanitized the manufacturing facility.

THE RESULTS

Inspectors found no salmonella in Ventura’s facilities. No one reported any illnesses. Sales took a slight drop because of the recall and then increased. The FDA commended Ventura Foods and Brian for taking quick and responsible action.
